What is a Fish Finder?

A fish finder is a device that uses sonar to locate where fish are in a lake. It gives a graphical display to show you where the fish are.

Why Do I Need To Use a Fish Finder?

Government research into lake fishing has brought us some interesting figures. It turns out that 90% of the fish congregate in 10% of the lake. Have you ever gone fishing and not had a single bite? While on the other side of the lake catch nets are brimming? If you had a fish finder you would be able to identify the exact area where the fishing is best.

How Do Fish Finders Work?

Fish finders use sonar. They send out a sound wave to the bottom of the lake which then bounces back to the receiver. The fish finder can then calculate how deep the lake is by the time it takes for this wave to come back. If a fish comes in between the sonar and the bottom of the lake, the sound will bounce off the fish and return to the receiver quicker than the sound that bounces off the bottom of the lake. In this way the fish finder can show a graphical representation of where the fish in the lake are.

Do I Need A Boat To Use A Fish Finder?

Not all fishers have a boat to take out. Especially in the UK shore fishing is far more popular. The fish finders were originally designed to be used on a boat but fishermen being a clever bunch they have worked out a way to use fish finders accurately from the shore.

A wireless sonar fish finding device is attached to a small modified radio controlled boat. The boats are usually modified to be air tight and have a compartment that allows you to attach your line and enter bait.

You control the boat from the shore and look on the digital read out until you find a good area with lots of fish. By pressing the button on the remote you release your fishing line and your bait into the ideal location. All you have to do then is reel in your catch.
